Married Monday:Marriage Bible Verses, Gen 2:22-24 and Mat 19:4-6

Last month I talked about a couple verses in Proverbs that dealt with favor and character in marriage. This month the two verses I want to talk about are very similar to each other, they show that God views a husband and wife as one flesh.

Genesis 2:22-24

22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man."24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

Women was made from man, they are of the same flesh and bones. She was taken from the rib beside man’s heart, not from his heel to walk on or from his head for her to rule over but from his side so that she could walk with him. They form a team, them against the world if needed.  I didn’t realize until researching this verse a bit more that in Hebrew man is ish and woman is ishah, similar to in English the man is the route of each word so that it can be seen that woman is named after man.

When married the two become one, and that is embodied when they have a child a perfect result of the union. But even before that God views the couple as one and together with him the two of them are complete.

This was one of my favorite parts of becoming married, I knew from that point on it was no longer our parents jobs to take care of us but it was our job to take care of each other and while parents and family is always there for us, and was us two on our own to make our life happen.

Mathew 19: 4-6

4 "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' 5 and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh' ? 6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

In this verse Jesus refers back to Genesis, telling the Pharisees what the plan God had for marriage. There was one man and one woman; therefore a man should only have one wife.  This conversation is happening because the Pharisees want to divorce and remarry for any reason or have multiple wives.

The plan of marriage is for a man and woman to leave their parents and hold to their new spouse. They are now one, like mentioned in the Genesis verse above. This next part is mentioned a few times throughout scripture, let man not separate. There should at no time be another person or worldly things that separate what has been joined and promised by God. With the image that two become one person it is easy to see that one person cannot become two again.

If it is so important that the Bible references the becoming one multiple (at least 3) times throughout the old and new testament, then we should listen and obey it. The two are now a team, intertwined with each other. Physically, spiritually, and mentally the couple is one, they should support each other and know that they rise and fall with the other.  This is not always easy, sometimes couples get complacent and except their divided marriages and just let them keep going. Pledge now to always be diligent in keeping your oneness with your spouse. Pray together, talk regularly, and keep the line of communication open. It will always be you two against the world.

I have enjoyed diving deeper into these 2 verses and am enjoying this series. I hope you like this series as well. Are there marriage verses that you would like others to see and get a deeper look at? Leave a comment or contact me and let me know.
