Lucky Kettle Corn in Honor of National Popcorn Lovers Day

This week is full of green food, why you ask, because St. Patrick’s Day is next Tuesday! What’s the first thing you think of when you think St. Patty’s Day, for me it is green, Irish, and the Lucky Charm leprechaun. In honor of National Popcorn Lovers Day tomorrow (3-12) I decided to mix up some kettle corn (yes homemade) add some green and of course those fun little marshmallows from the cereal. Look at this awesome retro designed box I found at Target!

Back to the Kettle Corn, I’m a lover of all popcorn but this is by far my favorite. You won’t find me leaving a craft fair, rodeo or event without my bag of kettle corn. I just found out a few weeks ago that its actually fairly easy to make at home! Which is dangerous because now I want to make it all the time.

I mixed it up a bit and made it green, to do this all I did was add about a ¼ teaspoon of green gel color to the oil as it heated.

Homemade Kettle Corn

Ingredients: (makes 4 cups)

1 tbsp and 1 1/3 tsp Oil
1 tbsp and 1 1/3 tsp white sugar
½ tsp salt
3 tbsp and ½  tsp kernels

If you want to make a bigger batch, on the bag of your kernels it should give you amounts of oil and kernels, just make sure your sugar is the same amount as the oil each time.

Directions:
  • Heat the oil in pan over medium high; add three kernels in the cold oil. When all three have popped the oil is hot enough.
  • Add in the sugar and stir until mixed in and mostly melted. Then add in the salt and kernels.
  • Cover and let it sit for 3 SECONDS then pick up and shake for 3 SECONDS repeat until the popping has slowed to 2-3 seconds between.
  • Pour into a bowl and let cool a bit before touching. Think of the melted sugar mixture as lava until it has cooled a lot.

To make the Lucky Kettle Corn you'll need,
  • 1 batch of Kettle Corn with green coloring added to the oil
  • 1 t o 1 ½ cups of lucky charms marshmallows

We all know these are the best part.

Mix them up so that the marshmallows are well distributed. Put into little treat bags as gifts for a St. Patrick’s Day party, or serve it up in cute little bowls for a movie night snack.

Hope you enjoy some homemade kettle corn soon and make it festive with the lucky charms. Friday I will have a special post featuring another green food tradition!

  3. I, too, am a lover of popcorn and just recently started making my own kettle corn. It's so addictive! Adding food color sounds like something the gkids would like. Visiting from ARWB, Brenda

    1. Yes I bet they would love it! And you can do any color. If using the droppers from what I've seen it takes about 10 drops.
      Thank you for visiting :)
